Ateneo kept their record unblemished in the 2018 FilOil Cup as they pummeled UP on Sunday, 100-72.
The Fighting Maroons failed to put themselves on board in the tournament in their third try despite the efforts of Bright Akhuetie who ended up with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Akhuetie showed dominance in the first half, but he only converted three points afterwards due to foul trouble.
Paul Desiderio tried to keep it close in the third quarter in the absence of Akhuetie. Overall, he scored 14 points with two shots coming from deep. However, his heroics alongside Juan GDL’s 9 points were not enough as things went out of hand early in the fourth.
Ateneo shot baskets from almost everywhere in the court to keep themselves undefeated. Asistio led their squad by knocking down 4 out of his 5 three-pointers. Raffy Verano, Matt Nieto and Adrian Wong also made their presence felt by scoring in double digits. The Blue Eagles capitalized on UP’s turnovers and defensive lapses to grab the statement win.
The record of the Fighting Maroons now sit at 0-3 after losses from DLSU, MU and ADMU. This new setback makes UP’s next match against NU crucial as they try to keep their hopes alive in the Filoil Preseason Cup.
