UP Fighting Maroons show promise despite loss at PCCL

The UP Fighting Maroons ended their short stint in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) with a loss to San Sebastian Stags on January 17 at the Jose Rizal University Gymnasium.

Despite falling short of clinching a spot in the Elite Eight of the tilt, the UP Men’s Basketball Team showed offensive firepower and teamwork to gain a 1-1 record against their two opponents, PATTS and SSC-R.

In day one of the PCCL NCR Qualifiers, Rookie ng Bayan Juan Gomez de Liaño exploded with eight threes to lift the Maroons to victory with his 28 points. It is worth noting that Javi Gomez de Liaño and Paul Desiderio also scored double digits with 15 and 10 points respectively.

Much to the delight of UP fans, the boys started the year right with a statement win against a determined PATTS team. However, this was not the case in their next game.

The crucial game with San Sebastian Stags in day two ended in defeat despite the contribution of Paul Desiderio who racked up 23 points. Impressive performances were also shown by Juan GDL who contributed 18 points and Dave Murrell who chipped in 14.

It was a tough loss, but there is much to be excited about with the UP Fighting Maroons this year. Paul and Juan are living up to their selection as Gilas prospects with their consistent contribution. Their scoring output as a team in PCCL show signs of steady growth.

This is another setback for the squad, but indeed, there is nowhere to go but up with the UP Fighting Maroons.

San Sebastian ended up winning the NCR Qualifiers after defeating Colegio de San Lorenzo Griffins, 90-85, on January 18 at the JRU Gym.
