After fifth place finish this UAAP Season 79, the UP lady Fighting Maroons may have remedied their setter woes after departure of Jewel Lai, with Ayel Estranero. But their receiving and defense suffered a lot, which made it hard for them to recover after getting downed by stronger offensive teams. The answer to that? Bring back a natural setter and send Estranero back to the libero position. That adds a whole new level of flexibility and unpredictability coming into Season 80 or 81 when Cynthia Escutin, a Filipino-American setter will be joining the UP Fighting Maroons in their bid to the Final 4 and ultimately a chance to the championship.
Cynthia Escutin is a 5’6″ playmaker from the Minesota Volleyball Academy and is expected to be training with the UP Fighting Maroons on June this year. Coach Jerry Yee and the UP WVT Facebook page already published the news. On the NCSA recruitment page, she said: “I work extremely hard not only at volleyball but also with my academics. I have learned how to balance academics and volleyball. I have played volleyball for half my life and I feel that I am a hard worker. Leading my team is a strength of mine and I focus a lot on becoming a better volleyball player each practice.”
She started for Mounds View Senior High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota last year and will be taking up Bachelor of Sports Science in UP. For those who are curious about the setter, here are some of her shining moments – watch her make her plays!
