“Multi-titled mentor Jerry Yee is resigning as UP WVT coach on Monday after turning the program around in four seasons at the helm.” This was tweeted by Josiah Albelda.

The message was relayed to Josiah Albelda and had shocked a lot of UP Women’s Volleyball Team fans, as well as potential recruits.

In his stint with the Diliman squad, as per Albelda, “Jerry Yee had a 23-33 card in the UAAP, brought the Lady Maroons back to the Final 4 after a long absence, and made UP a destination for recruits.”

As of the moment, according to the tweet: “Yee has no immediate plans for the future, but wishes UP well in its future endeavors. He is also the head coach of Hope Christian School, which became sort of a pipeline for future UP volleyball players.”

“The girls are what’s important,” he says.

The UP Lady Fighting Maroons is currently winless in three games at the Premier Volleyball League. Yee will be leaving the girls midway in the tournament. Assistant Coach Kat de Lara is expected to call the shots for PVL. All eyes will be on UP as they find their new coach.

While several supporters may have called for Yee’s ouster as a coach, many would want for him to be the consultant or recruitment manager of the team.

A major revamp is expected to come after his resignation while it is a welcome news that Nicole Tiamzon and Hans Chuacoco are now part of the UP Integrated School coaching staff for both Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball teams. Is this going to be a move that will fortify their high school program and pipeline for their college program? Or, is this a separate move all along?

UP Fighting Lady Maroons main scoring option, opposite spiker Tots Carlos is finally joining the semi-pro leagues! This time, she was tasked to complete the Perlas Spikers line-up, reuniting with her former teammates, Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL). However, according to Carlos, she only started training for the PVL last Monday. Tots Carlos’ inclusion in the Perlas Spikers squad comes after the ITC issue hounding the LVPI and PSL head Tats Suzarra. Several former Ateneo players had expressed their disappointment to imports not being able to play because of the delay in release of the ITC’s for PVL.

Good news for everyone, though! Marian Buitre will also be suiting up for Ayala-Generika for the next PSL season while Isa Molde will be part of Foton.

Cynthia Escutin, Fil-am Setter Joins UP Lady Fighting Maroons

After fifth place finish this UAAP Season 79, the UP lady Fighting Maroons may have remedied their setter woes after departure of Jewel Lai, with Ayel Estranero. But their receiving and defense suffered a lot, which made it hard for them to recover after getting downed by stronger offensive teams. The answer to that? Bring back a natural setter and send Estranero back to the libero position. That adds a whole new level of flexibility and unpredictability coming into Season 80 or 81 when Cynthia Escutin, a Filipino-American setter will be joining the UP Fighting Maroons in their bid to the Final 4 and ultimately a chance to the championship.

Cynthia Escutin is a 5’6″ playmaker from the Minesota Volleyball Academy and is expected to be training with the UP Fighting Maroons on June this year. Coach Jerry Yee and the UP WVT Facebook page already published the news. On the NCSA recruitment page, she said: “I work extremely hard not only at volleyball but also with my academics. I have learned how to balance academics and volleyball. I have played volleyball for half my life and I feel that I am a hard worker. Leading my team is a strength of mine and I focus a lot on becoming a better volleyball player each practice.”

She started for Mounds View Senior High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota last year and will be taking up Bachelor of Sports Science in UP. For those who are curious about the setter, here are some of her shining moments – watch her make her plays!

FEU routs UP Fighting Lady Maroons to seal Final 4 slot

The UP Women’s Volleyball Team had a hot start this season, with a promising 4-0 beginning their UAAP Season 79 journey. However, after traumatic losses to Ateneo and NU twice, with the loss of key players Jewel Lai pre-season and Pia Gaiser ending her UAAP journey early on due to an ACL, the UP Fighting Lady Maroons found themselves out of contention in the Final 4 after giving away their last game against the FEU Lady Tamaraws, 21-25, 21-25, 25-27.

Kathy Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and Pia Gaiser officially ended their UAAP journey yesterday at the Filoil Flying V San Juan Arena. Instrumental to the resurgence of the women’s volleyball team in the UAAP, the trio started the winning ways as they broke the slump in Season 76 and made the Final 4 in Season 78.

Along the way, they also beat top guns – Season 77 champions Ateneo Lady Eagles, lead by Alyssa Valdez then; as well as, DLSU Lady Spikers this season in three straight sets.

What’s next for these girls? Bersola and Gaiser will be taking up medicine while Tiamzon is going to be part of a semi-pro league soon.
