UP Fighting Maroons, FEU Tamaraws Go to Ilo-ilo Invitational, April 28 – May 1

UP Fighting Maroons will once again, try to covet, one of the championship titles for this round of off-season games. This time, they are ought to battle three other teams, including Cebu’s finest Southwestern University and last year’s semifinalists FEU Tamaraws at the Iloilo National Invitational Basketball Championship.

The four-day event will be held at the Pototan Astrodome and is scheduled from April 28 to May 1. The said tournament will be UP and FEU testing grounds for their off-season bid at the Filoil Flying V Pre-season Tournament which will also start the same weekend. The admission for the games is free.

Paul Desiderio and Bright Akhuetie will be bannering the State U squad, along with Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano. Janjan Jaboneta of Antique and Richie Villaruz of Ajuy will also take part in the tourney.

The said tourney is spearheaded by Gov Arthur Defensor, Sr., Congressman Toto Defensor Jr. and Ruding Villaruz.

UP Fighting Maroons Reigns Supreme in Republica Cup 2017, Beats UST Growling Tigers, 100-91

UP Fighting Maroons, fresh from a championship crown in Araw ng Davao, scored another title. This time, they outlasted UST Growling Tigers in Republica Cup 2017 Finals held at the Malolos Sports & Convention Center, April 9.

State U finished the game 100-91, after an intense match that saw Bright Akhuetie’s ejection in the game, Steve Akomo and Jordan Sta. Ana graduating from fouls. Flooded by bad calls, the boys from Katipunan toughened their pressure, which only motivated them to rally the fourth quarter with a 9-3 start, 78-73.

Combination of treys from Renzo Subido and Marvin Lee got UST as close as six points but Paul Desiderio beasted at the end minutes of the game, powering 12 markers.

With a total of 36 points, Desiderio was announced the Most Valuable Player. This is the second time this off-season that UP won the championship. Aside from Desiderio, Juan Gomez de Liano showed signs of brilliance in his 15-point outing, while steady guard Jun Manzo chipped in 10.

For the UST Growling Tigers, who ended up as arunner-ups, Marvin Lee tallied a total of 23 points, scoring from first to fourth quarter. Steve Akomo had 16 points while Renzo Subido rained the court with four treys in his 16-point outing.

Missing from the UP bench are Pio Longa, AJ Madrigal and JJ Espanola while from the UST side, usual suspect Zachy Huang is missing while Justin Arana is silent throughout the game.

UP and UST might face each other once again as they both joined the Filoil Flying V Pre-season Tournament, which will start on April 29.

 

Akhuetie, Desiderio Fires UP Squad to #RepublicaCup2017 Finals

Bright Akhuetie and Paul Desiderio tag team for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons proved to be a force on court as the main guns of the UP squad tallied a score of 32 and 24 points in the semifinals of Republica Cup 2017.

The UP Fighting Maroons has advanced to the finals for the collegiate division after they won against Arellano University, 98-90, last Wednesday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center. Akhuetie beasted on the court with 20 rebounds as young guns Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano, Rob Ricafort rallied the team win.

UP is set to face the UST Growling Tigers on Sunday, April 9, for the finals. UST Growling Tigers defeated Diliman College in their semis game, 68-60.

Unbeaten in all of their games in the elimination round, UP Fighting Maroons will be in the hunt for their second championship crown this off-season after winning at the Araw ng Davao tournament last month. In their elims match, UP won over UST, 78-68, with the heroics of Desiderio for the Fighting Maroons and Justin Arana, Marvin Lee and Zachy Huang for the Growling Tigers.

FEU routs UP Fighting Lady Maroons to seal Final 4 slot

The UP Women’s Volleyball Team had a hot start this season, with a promising 4-0 beginning their UAAP Season 79 journey. However, after traumatic losses to Ateneo and NU twice, with the loss of key players Jewel Lai pre-season and Pia Gaiser ending her UAAP journey early on due to an ACL, the UP Fighting Lady Maroons found themselves out of contention in the Final 4 after giving away their last game against the FEU Lady Tamaraws, 21-25, 21-25, 25-27.

Kathy Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and Pia Gaiser officially ended their UAAP journey yesterday at the Filoil Flying V San Juan Arena. Instrumental to the resurgence of the women’s volleyball team in the UAAP, the trio started the winning ways as they broke the slump in Season 76 and made the Final 4 in Season 78.

Along the way, they also beat top guns – Season 77 champions Ateneo Lady Eagles, lead by Alyssa Valdez then; as well as, DLSU Lady Spikers this season in three straight sets.

What’s next for these girls? Bersola and Gaiser will be taking up medicine while Tiamzon is going to be part of a semi-pro league soon.

UP Fighting Maroons, to join FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup 2017

The UP Fighting Maroons, with the leadership of Paul Desiderio, is expected to join the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup 2017! This year, all eight teams of the UAAP will be joining the pre-season tournament.

UP Fighting Maroons will be part of Group B where they are joined by Adamson University, Arellano University, De Ls Salle-College of St. Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Far Eastern University, Mapua Institute of Technology, National University, San Sebastian College.

Meanwhile, De La Salle Green Archers, the reigning champs, will be joined by the following in Group A: Jose Rizal University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum of the Philippines University, San Beda College, University of Perpetual Help, University of the East, and University of Santo Tomas.

The cup will be having single elimination games wherein the top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds.
